Production Philosophy
Music production is a lifelong journey for me. Every CD project is a trip within that journey. Every trip hones my skill. Every trip brings challenges that when worked through broaden my understanding and knowledge. Every trip creates new friendships and deepens old ones.
There is nothing quite like helping someone fulfill a dream. In the case of a musical recording, I’ve come to realize that the dream must belong to the artist - not the producer. As producer I endeavour to discover the vision and intent of the artist and then commit expertise, experience and resources to bring it to reality. The strength that I bring to production is that of a refiner. I do not intend or expect to have all the good ideas. Although I can be directive when necessary, I prefer to provide a framework and then allow the musicians to initiate and bring suggestions. I ensure that the ideas are consistent with the artist's vision, values, timeline, and of course - budget. It is the producer who sets the tone and creates a relaxed, enjoyable, collaborative atmosphere. This in turn nurtures confidence and creativity in the artist and other musicians. Where this environment exists excellence is likely to follow. I want every trip to end knowing that I have offered my best to honour the artist who chose to trust me with their dream. I want the journey to end knowing that I have invested well the talents given me by God. Want to take a trip? |
